3 | Artificial Intelligence in Journalism

Artificial Intelligence, or "AI" for short, has become increasingly more popular in this day and age. It is implemented in every form of media today. AI has become a hot topic of discussion in today's journalism for both good and bad reasons.

According to UNC University Libraries artificial intelligence can be used for many good things. Things such as, automated reporting, fact checking and verification, or translation. With good comes bad. In my personal opinion, I don't believe in the AI newscasters. I believe that voice-over work, or transcription can be used for good, but the process of practicing, training, and almost replacing people who have grown in their field is something I don't agree with.

Take this video as an example of why AI can and cannot be helpful:

In this video they talk about good uses for AI, like I've said, transcription and such. But, they also speak in this video about how generative AI can be used illfully, even mentioning that if they were to use a video from the internet in one of their blogs that was AI and they didn't know, it would not be good.

Let's use ChatGPT for example. One of the more popular uses of AI in this generation. There was a trend going around on TikTok for a while of people asking ChatGPT deep questions. This AI was not programmed to respond, so people found loopholes. They would tell ChatGPT to say something else in replace of "yes" or "no". This is a good example of AI bias. ChatGPT, and all other AI softwares, are full of bias due to the media they are fed.

While AI has been utilized in many companies since 2010, there is always a risk of the data calculated by these systems containing inaccurate or completely false information. Due to this, it is extremely important to fact-check with other news sources in order to ensure that the information that you are reading is completely factual.
